About Miscanthus PDF Print

Miscanthus: a fascinating genus

None of the miscanthus species and cultivars in our grasses assortment is rhizomatous.

Even not crosslings from miscanthus sacchariflorus x sinensis  like Memory and Ballerina.

Most of them are very winterhardy like:

- miscanthus x giganteus

- miscanthus olygostachyus

- miscanthus sinensis

  and some sp. sinensis condensatus

- miscanthus transmorrisonensis

- miscanthus yakushimensis

and hybrids from these species

- miscanthus flavidus (cv. Taiwan) seems to be hardy by bold frost with -13 below zero.

This plant is  still green at the end of January

Less hardy are:

- miscanthus nepalensis.

Survived bold frost in 2008/2009 with - 11 below zero but was rather damaged.

  The regrowth was 60 - 70 % in hight.

- some of the condensatus cv.s were damaged that same winter like Cabaret.

Cabaret survived, Cosmopolitan had less damage, Emerald Giant no damage at all.

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS

Most of the cultivars we know come from miscanthus sinensis.

Or they are hybrids from or with this species.

A great deal of miscanthus (x) sinensis cultvars until now among the oldest and best known come from the famous plantbreeder Ernst Pagels from Leer in

the North of Germany.
